Prime Minister

The prime minister of the Solomon Islands is the head of government and thus responsible for the overall co-ordination of government through collaboration with the cabinet. The election of a prime minister takes place in the form of a secret ballot conducted by elected members of parliament. All members elected to parliament are eligible to stand for the position of prime minister. Once the election result is decided it is then announced by the governor-general. The prime minister, like all other elected parliamentarians in the Solomon Islands, is elected for a four year term.

Responsibilities of the prime minister include the selection of ministers to form the cabinet, coordinate the work of all ministers and keeping the governor-general informed of the general conduct of the government. Prime ministers of the Solomon Islands also hold ministerial portfolios.
