Universities and Colleges in South Africa
In 2012, the Council on Higher Education recognised 23 public universities, including 2 concentrating on distance education and 6 universities of technology. It recognised 88 private higher education institutions and a further 27 were provisionally registered. There are some 890,000 students in public higher education institutions, some 138,000 of whom are post-graduate students (2010). Literacy among people aged 15-24 is 98% (2007). In 2008, the University of Cape Town was the only African university to make it into the top 200 list of The Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings.
