There are numerous printing and publishing companies throughout Sri Lanka. Large publishing firms in the country, such as Godage International Publishers and Perera Hussein Publishing House, are mainly based in Colombo and publish a wide range of literature spanning many subjects. The former is the main outlet of Godage Book Emporium which produces children’s books, school books, academic and literary works, translation, art and crafts and reprinting Sri Lankan classics. Tikiri Publishers (Pvt) Ltd. specialise in children’s story books. International Book House Publishers are agents for large companies such as Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press; they are also agents of Orient Longman, Frank Bros & Co. and Unicorn and predominately publish English medium school textbooks.
The Sri Lanka Book Publishers’ Association is the trade body for the sector publishing sector.
Sri Lanka is listed at 55 out of 144 countries on the Global Competitiveness Report 2012–13 with a score of 3.8 out of 7.0 for intellectual property protection. In comparison, nearby country India is listed 63 out of 144 countries with a score of 3.7 out of 7.0 and Bangladesh is placed 131 out of 144 countries with a score of 2.4.
There are two main book fairs in Sri Lanka: The Colombo International Book Fair and the Kandy Book Fair. The former is the showcase for local and international publishers where many well-established publishers attend, many from Europe. The latter is organised by the Sri Lanka Book Publishers Association and attracts many schools, libraries and other governmental institutions with the central province.
There are 16 universities in Sri Lanka; University of Colombo is one of them. The total student body across the country is close to 100,000 creating a vast industry for educational materials (Ministry of Education).
Printing companies provide services including book, newspaper and magazine printing, poster printing and business cards. The Sri Lanka Association of Printers promotes the interests of the printing industry in the country. The Sri Lanka Institute of Printing was established in the country to improve the quality of the printing industry through training and acquiring the best technology and resources.
