A 2010 survey showed that there are approximately 170 main telephone lines and over 820 mobile phone subscribers per 1000 people in Sri Lanka. The number of mobile phone subscribers in the country more than doubled in the period from 2008 to 2010. Fixed line telephones installations grew threefold from 2004 to 2009 largely exceeding the trend in most countries worldwide. Sri Lanka Telecom is the country’s largest telecommunications provider, operating over 80% of the country’s fixed line network. Other notable fixed line providers are Suntel and Lanka Bell. Prominent mobile operators are Etisalat, Mobitel and Hutch. 9% of the Sri Lankan population are internet users (2009) with the largest internet service provider being Sri Lanka Telecom. The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka is the body responsible for the regulation of the telecoms sector in accordance with the 1997 Sri Lanka Telecommunication Act.
