National roads carry over 70% of Sri Lanka’s traffic and are vital for the movement of goods and people. Roads are often the only way for the majority of the rural population to gain access to essential services such as schools and hospitals. There are over 97,000km of road, 81% of which is paved, constituting the country’s road network. Sri Lanka also has 1,200km of railway lines which run between major towns.
There are several large ports in Sri Lanka including those at Colombo, Gualle, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. The Port of Colombo is the largest, supporting the country’s position as a regional trading hub. Airports are found in major cities including Colombo, Trincomalee, Talaimannar and Jaffna which service domestic, regional and international flights.
