There are eleven years of compulsory education starting at age five. Some 99% of pupils complete primary school (2006). The school year starts in January.
Numerous independent schools can be found throughout the Sri Lanka offering both the Sri Lankan syllabus as well as internationally renowned programmes such as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the International Baccalaureate (IB). Many independent schools in Sri Lanka are international schools which are popular with expatriates and offer international education programmes such as the IB. Notable among these in Sri Lanka are the Overseas School of Colombo, the only school in Sri Lanka to offer the full IB programme from primary school to diploma level; and the British School in Colombo which offers the IB diploma.
