Find Electricity and Power expertise in St Kitts and Nevis

Until 2008 St Kitts and Nevis was entirely reliant on electricity generated from imported oil, processed using diesel fuelled generators. Since 2008, serious explorations have begun into renewable energy resources such as bioenergy, wind, geothermal and solar. Development of such renewable energy sources is the responsibility of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development, Natural Resources and Environment. Nevis has been found to have high geothermal potential and the West Indies Power Company is working on the development and construction of the Nevis Geothermal Power Plant, scheduled to open in 2012. The North Star Project at Belle Vue aims to use wind energy to supply up to 15% of overall energy capacity of the national grid. The power systems of the two islands are not interconnected and thus have separate utilities companies managing production and distribution, the St Kitts Electricity Department and Nevis Electricity Company Limited. The Ministry of Public Works, Utilities, Transport and Postal Services has regulatory oversight of the electricity sector.
