No mineral deposits have been found on the islands in sufficient quantities to be commercially viable. There are no multinational mining corporations working in St Kitts and Nevis.
The quarrying industry plays only a minor role in St Kitts and Nevis’ economy, involving salt, sand, gravel and crushed stone for the construction. St Kittitian and Nevisian law strictly prohibits large scale removal of beach sand, however the practice continues to degrade beaches and threaten the country’s sea turtle population. There is one quarry on St Kitts, which is government-owned and controlled by the Public Works Department. The multiple quarries on Nevis are managed by landowners.
St Kitts and Nevis exports a small amount of sand each year to neighbouring countries.
The Ministry of Housing, Public Works, Energy and Public Utilities governs quarrying.
Section 30(a) and (b) of the St Christopher and Nevis National Conservation and Environment Protection Act, revised in 2002, and Section 36 of the National Conservation and Environment Protection Act prohibit sand mining on beaches without a government permit. Offenders can be fined and have equipment confiscated.
