St Kitts and Nevis’ Ministry of Education aims to provide students with a comprehensive course of quality lifelong education, which enables them to develop and achieve their full potential and make a meaningful contribution to national development. The Ministry of Education is sub-divided into several department providing different services including early childhood education, further education and education planning. Resources of the Ministry of Education include a Public Library, a Student Education Learning Fund and provision of school meals. The Examinations Department of the Ministry of Education administers examinations in S Kitts and Nevis on behalf of overseas exam boards, for example the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC). The National Skills Training Programme (NSTP) is a division of the ministry which provides community education through flexible, short-term training in occupations such as barbering, masonry, art and graphics and landscaping.
Public spending on education was 4.5% of GDP in 2007. In the wider community, which already enjoys a very high level of literacy, the government promotes programmes to improve literacy. It has also launched an initiative to promote ICT skills in rural areas.
