Regional & Local Government

St Kitts and Nevis is divided into around 15 parishes, the majority of which are located in St Kitts. The largest parish in terms of areas is St James Windward, which is 31km squared. The most heavily populated parish is St George Basseterre, which is home to the country’s capital city. The parishes of St Kitts and Nevis do not function as regional or local governments; instead they are administrative structures of the federal government. The exception is the parishes of Nevis which combine to form a single island authority, which acts as a local government within the federation.
