Tongan electricity is mostly generated using imported diesel with around 45 per cent being used in its production. Electricity is available to 95 per cent of Tongatapu (the main island) households and commercial consumers. Government-owned Tonga Power is responsible for electricity generation and distribution. Electricity production in Tonga is estimated at 40 million kWh and consumption at around 37 million kWh (2008). The Electricity Commission regulates the sector.
