Tonga is a net importer of goods and services. Net imports are 44% of GDP (2009). Tonga’s main trade partners are Fiji, New Zealand, Japan, The United States, Australia and China. In 2010 Tonga imported almost 32 per cent of all imports from Fiji and its highest export country was Hong Kong, which took over 26 per cent of all exports. Imported products include food, machinery, transport equipment, fuels and chemicals. Approximately 1,200 barrels of oil are imported per day (2009). The average ad valorem tariff for imported goods is 16.9% (2009). Tonga exports about $41 million worth of products and services each year (2009). Exported commodities include squash, fish, vanilla beans and root crops.
