Tonga has no proven commercially exploitable oil and gas resources. In 2010 the government of Tonga entered into an agreement with US oil exploration company the Modulus-Baringer Group which has seen exploratory drilling for hydrocarbon begin. The licence granted to Modulus-Baringer Group for exploratory mining is due to expire in 2018. The country imports about 1,200 barrels of oil per day, with petroleum accounting for 20% of the country’s total yearly imports (2012). Imported petroleum products make up 46% of the energy sources available in Tonga (2011).
