Education NGOs and CSOs in Tonga

Tonga has many different Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) operating in the education sector. The Friendly Islands Teachers Association the only trade union for teachers, is the main voice for teachers in civil society. One of the main NGOs working in education is the Tonga National Youth Congress which was founded in 1991 to improve the welfare of youth in Tonga, by promoting responsibility and citizenship. It is an independent body that acts as an umbrella body for six island NGOs. Another key education based NGO is the Pacific Leadership Program (PLP) which is working to provide support for school leadership in non-government secondary schools. PLP has been developing relationships with leading organisations since 2009; including the church, private and youth sectors.
