Bilateral and Multilateral Co-operation

Tonga is a member of many different international organisations, including the Commonwealth, which it has been a member of since 1970. Tonga is taking part in a number of Commonwealth projects. Tonga is a also member of the following key intergovernmental groupings: the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), Group of 77 at the United Nations (G77), South Pacific Regional Trade and Economic Co-operation Agreement (SPARTECA), Pacific Community (SPC), South Pacific Forum (SPF), United Nations (UN) and its specialised and related institutions and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Tonga is party to a bilateral investment treaty with the United Kingdom and Australia is Tonga’s largest bilateral donor. It is estimated that the Official Development Assistance (ODA) aid given to Tonga by Australia is approximately US$32.1 million (2011). Tonga has also been the beneficiary of technical and grant aid from Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which totalled almost US$12 million in 2009.
