The National Trade Union Centre of Trinidad and Tobago (NATUC) is located in Port of Spain. The Federation of Independent Trade Unions and NGOs (FITUN) is one of the primary bodies and actively monitors trade negotiations involving Trinidad and Tobago. Other operational unions include the Oilfields Workers Trade Union (OWTU) and the Trinidad Sugar and General Workers Trade Union. The International Labour Organization’s Caribbean offices are located in Port of Spain; interestingly, Labour Day in Trinidad and Tobago is held annually on 19 June, the anniversary of the day of protest that led to the recognition of the modern trade union movement. In Trinidad and Tobago it is necessary to register all trade unions in order for them to be legally compliant and recognised by the government. Registration offers trade unions and their members protection from legal prosecution, as outlined in the Trade Union Act, and information on registration can be obtained from the Trade Unions Unit of the Ministry of Labour & Small & Micro Enterprise Development.
