Education NGOs and CSOs in Trinidad and Tobago

There are several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society organisations (CSOs) working in Trinidad and Tobago’s education sector. Educational guidance counselling and social work services are provided in primary and secondary schools throughout the country. In collaboration with the NGOs, a wide variety of services are offered through government ministries and committees that are committed to curbing the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with a particular emphasis on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and improving the lives of those living with HIV. The Cropper Foundation launched a Public Education for Sustainable Development initiative in 2005, and the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) also contributes to environmental training awareness and education. Environment Tobago (ET), one of Tobago’s most respected NGOs, runs programmes that seek to improve student learning. The YMCA operates a Youth Leadership/Character Development Programme, and the Holy Name Training Centre offers a residential programme for girls in skills development.
