There are very few major corporations in Tuvalu. Most companies are state owned owing to the country’s small size, and the high level of government employment leaves little room for private sector activity. The National Bank of Tuvalu was once jointly owned by the country’s government and Barclays Bank, however since 1995 the government has been the sole owner. There are a limited number of multinational affiliates operating in Tuvalu. Pacific Teleport (Pactel) is a Sydney based telecommunications company selling products within the country, and Golden Ocean is a Chinese fishing company which operates its tuna fishing business in Tuvalu’s waters. There is no monetary union in the South Pacific.
