Private sector publishing has flourished in Uganda since the economic liberalisation of the 1990s. Foundation Publishers Limited is one of the major local publishing houses in the country, producing a variety of products from academic and school textbooks to fiction and tourist-related literature. Subsidiaries of international publishing firms, Longman Uganda Limited and Macmillan Uganda Limited, operate in the country. Macmillan Uganda Limited trades as Moran (Uganda) Publishers Limited, Uganda’s biggest national publisher who specialises in educational publishing. Makerere University publishes a wide catalogue of journals that cover many disciplines. According to the National Book Trust of Uganda, an organisation which promotes authorship, publishing and development of the culture of reading in Uganda, the most growth in publishing has been seen through educational books.
The Uganda Publisher’s Association is the principle body representing the publishing sector in the country.
Uganda is listed on the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report 2012–13 and is ranked 123 out of 144 countries. The country has been given a score of 3.4 out of 7.0 for intellectual property protection. In comparison, nearby country Tanzania is placed 97 out of 144 countries with a score of 3.1 out of 7.0 for intellectual property protection.
In the past Uganda has hosted an International Book Fair to celebrate the 20th National Book Week Festival in November 2012. One of the key themes of the fair was to present Uganda’s historical story of the past 20 years. There are many universities in Uganda, with many UK institutions also offering courses here. Makerere University in Kampala is one of the country’s main universities.
There are over 100 printing companies in the country. Nasser Road in Kampala is a well-known printing hub of companies providing all forms of printing services, including typesetting, designing, colour separation, offset printing, sorting, numbering, binding, packaging and delivery.
The Uganda Printers Association is the main representative body of the sector.
