Find Water and Sanitation expertise in United Kingdom

The water industry in the UK has been privatised since 1989. However, there is no competition between water companies for domestic customers as one cannot switch suppliers. There are over 25 companies, each supplying a specific region or regions. The bottled water industry is a big business worth around US$3 billion in annual revenues. Since the water in the UK is safe to drink much of this success has been attributed to effective marketing. The Office of Water Service (OFWAT) regulates water services in England and Wales; the Water Commissioner regulated that in Scotland. Water supply remains in the public sector in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Environment Agency is responsible for environmental regulation, and the Drinking Water Inspectoratefor regulating drinking water quality.
