Tanzania is fast becoming one of Africa’s leading gold-producing regions. After three decades of relative economic uncertainty, in 1997 the Tanzanian government re-opened its doors to foreign investors, which helped lay the way for economic rejuvenation.

The diverse natural mineral resources in Tanzania include gold, iron ore, nickel, copper, cobalt, silver, diamond, tanzanite, ruby, garnet, limestone, soda ash, gypsum, salt, phosphate, coal, uranium, gravel, sand and dimension stones.

Tanzania is the 4th largest producer of gold in Africa following South Africa, Ghana and Mali. Tanzania produces approximately 40 tonnes of gold a year, 10 tonnes of silver and diamonds at 112670 carats, and 2980 tonnes of copper. In total, mining in the country contributes 2.8% to GDP each year, which should rise significantly in the future. Business Monitor International (BMI) forecast an average annual growth in the sector in the region of 7.7% between 2011 and 2015. BMI also predicted a potential doubling in value of the sector between 2010 and 2015, from US$0.64bn to US$1.28bn

Tanzania also has reserves of, iron ore, copper, cobalt, nickel, silver, tanzanite, ruby, diamond, garnet, limestone, soda ash, uranium, gypsum, salt, coal, phosphate, gravel, sand and dimension stones.

Although the country’s revenue relies heavily on gold mining, quarrying for sand and stone, such as granite, is essential for infrastructure and materials. Granite is in especially high demand both locally and on the international markets. The Huamao project is one of the latest projects to offer high revenues to investors in an aggregate materials operation launch.

However, the mining and quarrying industry in the country has come under scrutiny after claims of exploitive child labour practices and accidents during illegal quarrying activities have seen multiple deaths.

The major legislation governing the mining and mineral industry in Tanzania today are the 1997 Mineral Policy, the 1998 Mineral Act and the 2010 Mineral Act.
