Transport in United Republic of Tanzania
Several airlines run regular services into the main towns in Tanzania. There are also airstrips in all national parks and at some of the top-end luxury lodges. Self-drive car hire is available in major cities, and traffic drives on the left. Visitors with an English language driving license do not need an international driving permit to be able to drive in the country. Taxis are widely available, but do not have meters, so fares must be agreed before setting off. Hotels can arrange an authorised taxi or chauffeur-driven car. Buses are inexpensive and connect most places in Tanzania and there are regular daily services from Dar es Salaam to Arusha, Morogoro and Moshi. Comfortable, air-conditioned ferry services run between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar several times a day. There is also a ferry crossing from Zanzibar to Pemba. Both Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria have regular steamer services, which run between the ports of Bukoba and Mwanza on Lake Tanganyika, and from Kigoma in Tanzania to Mpulunga in Zambia on Lake Victoria.
