There are 12 years of compulsory education starting at age five. Primary school comprises seven years and secondary five. The school year starts in September.
There are numerous independent schools in Grenada; most of these are located in or around the capital of St George’s. Primary and pre-primary schools include Grenada Montessori and Preparatory School, L’Anse Aux Epines, and First Choice Junior School. Grenada Montessori and Preparatory School provides programmes for children aged 3 months to 12 years and offer small teacher to student ratios. Primary schools in the area are Sunny Side Private School, Limes Mennonites, Kay-Dees School, Grenada Junior Academy, Alpha Primary School, and 3 R’s Junior School. Lots of private schools tend to be religious institutions, for example Alpha Primary School is a Roman Catholic school; students do not have to follow the religion although they are exposed to the schools religious beliefs. In addition there are private schools offering primary and secondary education; these include Beacon School, Westmoreland School and Meridian School of Grenada.
