There are six years of compulsory education starting at the age of six. Primary school comprises seven years and secondary five, with cycles of three and two years. Some 89 per cent of pupils complete primary school (2009). The school year starts in September.

There are numerous independent or private schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago. All private schools operating in the country must be registered with the Ministry of Education. The government provides subsidies to private education for primary, secondary and tertiary level institutions (TLIs). Private schools can be found throughout the country, but those in the capital, Port of Spain, include the Precious Little Angels, Bishop Anstey Junior, Blackman’s Private School, Holy Faith Preparatory, Holy Name Preparatory and Port of Spain. There are also about 147 private Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Centres in the Port of Spain region.
