There are nine years of compulsory education starting at the age of six. Primary school comprises five years and secondary seven, with cycles of three and four years. The school year starts in April.
There are numerous independent or private schools throughout India. The Right to Education Act, passed in 2009, mandates that private schools set aside 25% of admissions for low-income, underprivileged and disabled students. It should be noted that it has generated some controversy. One of the most prestigious is the Woodstock School, which attracts students from all around the world, giving the school a cosmopolitan quality. This is reflected in their primary desire “to mould students into global citizens”. Another notable example is the Shri Ram School in New Delhi, which boasts a progressive, secular, child centred, co-educational environment committed to providing quality education for all their students.
