The Teachers Association of the Maldives is one of the leading voices in education civil society. Much of the work done by education-based NGOs in the Maldives was linked to the recovery of the sector in the post-tsunami period. Examples include the Australian Council for International Development, VSO, Australian Volunteers Intentional, Lutheran World Relief and Save the Children Alliance. VSO has acted in an advisory and academic role in order explore the constraints experienced by island school leaders in implementing changes in their schools to improve the quality of education in the Maldives’ whilst examining educational leadership in a developing country that is striving but struggling to meet global educational goals and build on its indigenous roots.
