There are 11 years of compulsory education starting at the age of six. Primary school comprises six years and secondary six, with cycles of four and two years.The school year starts in January.
For higher education, students need to go overseas, mainly to Australia and New Zealand, and scholarships are available for this. Tertiary education in Nauru is provided by the University of the South Pacific (USP). The USP Nauru Campus offers tutorials and face-to-face courses in accounting, management, early childhood education, English, library and informational studies, nutrition and disability studies, as well as bachelor degree course in education. The Continuing Education programme provides training in ICT and book-keeping. Nauru’s Secondary School was refurbished in 2010 and includes Trade and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) facilities.
