There are six years of primary education and seven years of secondary, with cycles of three and four years. The school year starts in January.

The Solomon Islands has a few private schools, such as the fee-paying Woodford International School which was founded in 1950 and was pursuing authorisation as an International Baccalaureate (IB) school and a candidate school for the IB’s Primary Years Programme in 2011. There are various independent religious schools scattered throughout the islands providing primary education available to all children, including Perch Christian School, Holy Cross Literacy School, Mothers Union Literacy School and the All Saints Literacy School.
