Communicable diseases along with maternal, perinatal and nutritional conditions in Dominica accounted for an estimated 11 per cent of all mortality in 2008. A government paper on HIV/AIDS reported a prevalence rate of 0.8 per cent across all age groups in 2009. Dominica is a non-endemic country for malaria. Estimated incidences of tuberculosis (TB) fell slightly in the period 1990-2012 while estimated mortality (when mortality data excludes cases comorbid with HIV) almost halved overall during this time, although levels have been rising since 2003. There was one reported case of tetanus in 2009.
The most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses in Dominica are schizophrenia and depression. Neuropsychiatric disorders contributed an estimated 25 per cent of the global burden of disease in 2008.
