Mukono

Mukono, named for its chief town, is a district located in the Central Region of Uganda. The district shares a border with Lake Victoria, an excellent destination for water sports enthusiasts which offers opportunities for sport fishing, rafting, canoeing, cruising and sailing.

Sezibwa Falls, located in the centre of Mukono District, are a cultural landmark of great importance to Buganda’s heritage as they are said to have been born of ‘Nakangu Tibatesa’, the wife of ‘Nsubuga Sebwaato’ in Kawuna. One of the official cultural sites of the Kingdom of Buganda, the falls are popular among tourists not only for their cultural significance but also due to their beautiful scenery and forest reserve. The area houses vast camping grounds and forest trails as well as over 100 species of birds, together with caves, century old trees and rock formations of cultural significance. Other nearby cultural sites include the Ngamba Islands in the Koome Archipelago on Lake Victoria, Ssekabaka Kintu’s Palace at Dindo and the Nabitimba Cultural Site, a repository for some of Buganda’s cultural drums.
