Since 1995, Media Enterprises has become the largest distributor of educational and other non-fiction books for the Bahamian market. The company acts as a representative for Macmillan Caribbean (an imprint of Macmillan Publishers Ltd.), Oxford University Press and Nelson Thornes. Media Enterprises also has rapport with many English-language educational publishers. Predominant texts in the country provide for the Bahamian and Caribbean school curricula; tourism and books on food, history, social studies and local culture. There are many publishers such as Wavey Line Publishing and White Sound Press which provide books, charts and maps.
There is some market in The Bahamas for native language texts. Although the official language of The Bahamas is Standard English, the majority of the population speaks an English-based dialect which consists of Queen’s diction, African influence and island dialect.
No international book fairs take place in The Bahamas; however the Sandals Foundation did sponsor a book fair to collect books for family island schools in Acklins and Cat Island in particular, which was severely impacted by Hurricane Irene in 2011.
