There are 12 years of compulsory education starting at age five. Primary school comprises six years and secondary six. Some 90% of pupils complete primary school (2009). The school year starts in September.
There are numerous independent or private schools spread throughout The Bahamas archipelago. One of the more noteworthy, St Andrews International School in Nassau, was the first Bahaman institution authorised to deliver the internationally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. Similarly, many private schools provide other pre-university qualifications of international standard, such as A-levels.
