Construction accounts for 6.4% of Barbados’s GDP (2008). The sector is also a significant source of employment in the country, with tourism and public sector projects being the key drivers. The Building Standards Authority enforces general construction standards of the building code and energy efficiency measures. There are between 300-500 engineers in the country, as well as numerous engineering firms. The key private sector bodies in the sector are the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers, the Barbados Institute of Architects, and the Barbados Contractors Association.
