Agriculture, forestry, hunting and fisheries together contribute only 2% of Botswana’s GDP (2007). Forest covers 21% of the total land area (2005). The main forest areas are in the north and north-east of the country. Commercial exploitation of forest reserves was suspended in 1992. The Department of Forestry and Range Resources of the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism and the Crop Production and Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture share responsibility for forestry.
