Trade union membership is relatively low in the country; it is estimated at 60,000-70,000 of the total employed workforce of 306,000. Most of the 25 trade unions are affiliated to the Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (moves are under way to rationalise the union movement and reduce the total to about half this number). Affiliates of the Federation include the Botswana Bank Employees Union, the Botswana Commercial and General Workers Union, the Botswana Railways Workers Union, the Botswana Teachers Union and the Botswana Public Employees Union.
