Cyprus is recognised as a country with complete freedom of expression and was ranked 22nd in the world in terms of press freedom by the independent watchdog NGO Freedomhouse in 2010. Freedom of the press is enshrined in Cyprus’ constitution.
The majority of newspapers are in Greek but several English language publications are also popular. Highly circulated Greek daily newspapers include Phileleftheros, Politis and Simerini. The Cyprus Mail, Cyprus Weekly and Cyprus Financial Mirror are the popular English language publications.
The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is the public broadcaster, which operates the main television and radio networks. The main television channels are RIK1, RIK2, BRT1, BRT2, Sigma TV, CNC Plus TV, Alpha TV, Middle East TV and Mega Channel Cyprus. CBC runs the public radio stations Radio 1 and Radio 2 in Greek, as well as Radio 3 in English, Turkish and Armenian. Prominent commercial radio networks include Radio Proto and Astra.
