India is divided into 28 states and seven union territories which are divided into about 590 districts. Uttar Pradesh is the largest state with a population of over 160 million. Rajasthan is the largest area-wise, about 340,000 square kilometres. Mumbai India’s most populated city is found in the state of Maharashtra and New Delhi, the capital, in Uttar Pradesh. Each of the states has a governor who has executive powers over the state. Cities and towns are run by municipal commissioners; mayors carry no executive power.
