Research Institutes in Jamaica
There are several higher education institutions and independent research institutes in Jamaica involved in undertaking research across many disciplines. Notable among these are the University of Technology and the University of the West Indies (UWI), which, as part of their educational ethos, also function as research institutions. In addition, there are: the Farquharson Institute of Public Affairs, which undertakes research in various areas that could affect the economic and social interests of Jamaica; the Mel Nathan Institute For Social Research, which undertakes research to assist the economically marginalised communities in both urban and rural areas, as well as with providing opportunities in education; and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute, which carries out key research initiatives in Jamaica’s agricultural sector. The Scientific Research Council (SRC) is Jamaica’s principal public sector agency responsible for the coordination and promotion of the implementation of scientific research.
