There are about 20 insurance companies operational in the country. The premiums growth rate between 2007 and 2008 was approximately 29.2%. The insurance sector is highly concentrated among the three largest groups: the State Insurance Company of Mauritius (SICOM), Swan/Anglo-Mauritius and British American Insurance (BAI). Public components of the sector include the Basic Retirement Pension, the National Pensions Fund, the National Savings Fund and the Civil Service Pension Scheme. The insurance industry in Mauritius is well developed and makes extensive use of reinsurance facilities. Insurance regulation and supervision is entrusted to the Financial Services Commission (FSC).
