Transport in Sierra Leone
Several international airlines run regular services into Freetown including, Astraeus Airlines and BMED. In terms of air transport, Sierra National Airlines (LJ) is the national carrier, but it does not operate internal flights, though private airlines or helicopter services can be chartered. There are several other modes of transport including, ferries and a Sea Coach Express (Water Taxi) that connect all coastal ports, schedules of which can be obtained from the National Tourist Board of Sierra Leone. Road transport is efficient though in parts the roads are not well maintained and during the rainy season road transport becomes challenging. There are car hire facilities available though an International Driving Permit is required as traffic drives on the right side of the road. In terms of public services, the Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation operates both long-distance and local bus services. The local bus service, especially in Freetown, is significantly supported by minibuses and shared taxis.
