Agriculture, forestry and fisheries contribute 3% of the country’s GDP. Exports from forest products form about 9% of the overall export of manufactured goods and earn a net foreign exchange of approximately R8.8 billion (2003). SA Forestry Ltd is the state-run company responsible for most of the remaining state plantations. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) is pursuing a reform programme in the forestry sector that will see the government leasing state-owned forest land to private-sector operators.
