Find Corporate expertise in South Africa
South Africa has a long-established history of large, transnational corporations. Today, many large companies of South African origin have operations throughout Africa (Standard Bank); some are established in Europe (Old Mutual); and some have a market foothold in Asia (SABMiller). The country is a global mining giant and the largest mining and natural resources companies in the world, namely BHP Billiton Plc and Anglo American Plc (also of South African origin), operate large concerns throughout the country. Other major players include Sasol (South African Coal, Oil and Gas Corporation), The Bidvest Group (an international services, trading and distribution company), Sanlam (financial services), FirstRand (financial services), Telkom (telecommunications) and MTN Group (telecommunications). All of these companies are listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), the largest stock market in Africa. The sophistication and depth of the JSE’s operations have made it a viable route for international investors intending to invest in South Africa and other African countries. In 2008, when many other stock markets struggled to cope with the credit crisis and economic downturn, the JSE experienced a record year.
