The main sources of electricity generation in Sri Lanka are oil and hydro power, producing 5092 GWh and 4129 GWh of electricity respectively in 2008. Sri Lanka’s largest electricity company is the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). With a market share of almost 100%, the CEB controls all major functions of generation, transmission, distribution and retailing in the country. Its hydro-power stations generated over 45% of the country’s electricity in 2006. The CEB is one of the only two on-grid electricity companies operating in Sri Lanka. The other is the Lanka Electricity Company which supplies approximately 460,000 customers, 86% of which are domestic with the remainder being industrial and commercial customers.
