Though it no longer has a monopoly, the Swaziland Royal Insurance Corporation dominates the insurance market; it was established in 1973 as a joint venture between the government and several large European and South African insurance groups to provide a comprehensive range of general and life insurance products. Since the market was opened to competition in 2006, several insurers, as well as brokers and agents, have been licensed. The Registrar of Insurance and Retirement Funds regulates the industry.
