There are nine years of compulsory education starting at age six. There are 10 state primary schools, two on the island of Vaitupu and one on each of the other eight inhabited islands. There is one state secondary boarding school on Vaitupu, with about 600 students, and one private secondary school run by the Congregational Christian Church of Tuvalu. The school year starts in January.
There are nine Government Primary schools, one on each island, and one independent primary school in Tuvalu (2000). Motufoua is Tuvalu’s only secondary school, formerly a church school it merged with the government school to save operational costs; the school is now jointly administered by the government. Entry into secondary from primary schools is compulsory.
