Tanzania is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The national standards body, the Tanzania Bureau of Standards, was established in 1975. It has been most active in promoting standards and quality in process technology, including agro-processing, chemicals and textiles, and engineering, including mining and construction.
The Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) is a non-statutory body which aims to maintain freedom of the press and media in Tanzania and has been in operation since 1997. The Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority is the regulatory body mandated to promote and protect safety and quality in the medical and cosmetic spheres.
Other regulatory bodies include the Bank of Tanzania, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority and the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority.
The World Bank Ease of Doing Business Index 2012 ranks Tanzania 90th out of 185 countries in overall ease of doing business. In starting a business (113th), paying taxes (129th), resolving insolvency (129th) and dealing with construction permits (174th) Tanzania ranks low. It ranks higher in enforcing contracts at 36th out of 185 countries.
