Research Institutes in Zambia
Several research projects in Zambia focus on the environment and health issues. The government-funded Zambian National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR) undertakes research in agriculture, water resources, minerals and industrial raw materials, and nuclear science and technology. The Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) researches crops, soil and water, and provides quality services to farmers. Researchers at the Malaria Institute at Macha, in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, work to prevent and control the mosquito-borne illness. The University of Zambia’s Institute of Economic and Social Research works in consultation with the Research Advisory Committee (RAC). Research is either self-initiated or commissioned by the government, international and business organisations, NGOs or individuals. Key health research institutions include The Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC), the Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) and the Zambia Forum for Health Research (ZAMFOHR).
