Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure Continually improving on service delivery Assigned with the promotion and development of the transport sector in the Maltese Islands, as well as with the e ective implementation of programmes and capital infrastructural projects that fall within its remit, the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure needs a good and well-structured works and infrastructure department that is able and willing to take on the many challenges of a burgeoning national economy. Works and Infrastructure Department e Works and Infrastructure Department within the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure was set up in 1992 expressly to provide a comprehensive quality service to the government in the design and implementation of public infrastructural works and projects. e Department is also responsible for a comprehensive range of quality services through its various directorates and units. Previously known as the Works Division, the Works and Infrastructure Department has, over the years, undergone various changes in the number of departments that fall under its jurisdiction. e Works and Infrastructure Department, led by Director General Architect Raymond Farrugia, comprises the following operational and supporting directorates and units, all of which provide a harmonised and e ective service: Q Project Design and Engineering Directorate QProjects Implementation Directorate QManufacturing and Services Directorate QCleansing Directorate QMarine, Storm Water and Valley Management Unit QRehabilitation Projects O ce A dynamic new approach to solving old problems e Ministry’s main objectives since the change of government in March 2013 have been undertaken with enthusiasm and a keen sense of realism. From the chaotic situation in the public transport sector that it inherited from the previous administration to the various un nished and/or shelved infrastructural projects it had to see to before embarking on its own major projects, the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure has opted for a dynamic new approach to solving old problems. e success of this hands-on approach has resulted in the successful completion and implementation of such major projects as the Dock No 1 project in Bormla, complemented by other infrastructural and restoration works in the same area of the ree Cities and Kalkara; the expansion and upgrading of the Coast road system, the anti- ooding system that will help alleviate the perennial problems faced by large communities within the inner-island towns and villages; and the complete overhaul of the Islands’ land transport system that is intended to win back the public’s trust a er the asco of a previous reorganisation carried out before March 2013. e Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure, however, is not merely trying to x things le undone or, at worst, badly done. It has embarked on its own major projects that will come into fruition in the next few years. Ray Farrugia Director General, Works and Infrastructure Department Mr Farrugia graduated in Architecture and Civil Engineering from the University of Malta in 1982 and completed his postgraduate studies, leading to an MSc in Construction and Engineering from the University of Leeds, UK, in 1987. He was appointed Director of the Districts Department within the Public Works Division in 1992, and subsequently Director at the Building and Engineering Department (1995–2003) and Director General of Works since 2003.
