PROFESSOR SIR MICHAEL MARMOT is director of the University College London Institute of Health Equity (Marmot Institute) and has led research groups on health inequalities for more than 35 years. At the international level, he is a foreign associate member of the Institute of Medicine, a former vice-president of the Academia Europaea and a former member of the Lancet–University of Oslo Commission on Global Governance for Health. He was chair of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health, which was set up by the World Health Organization in 2005, and produced a report, Closing the Gap in a Generation, in August 2008. At national level, he has led studies on breast cancer screening and ageing, and the Whitehall II Studies of British Civil Servants; he served as president of the British Medical Association in 2010–11 and is now the president of the British Lung Foundation. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution for six years and in 2000 was knighted for services to epidemiology and the understanding of health inequalities. Among other prizes and distinctions, Marmot has been awarded a Harvard Lowns Professorship for 2014–17. In October 2014 he was made president-elect of the World Medical Association. DR RUTH BELL is a senior advisor at the University College London (UCL) Institute of Health Equity and a senior research fellow at UCL. She is active in research and advisory roles to advocate and implement the global health agenda for health equity, and co-ordinates advocacy for health equity to national and international policy and research forums.
