The construction sector of Brunei is largely supported by government sponsored projects; the most prominent being the Ministry of Development’s National Housing Project, which aims to provide accessible and low-cost housing to 30,000 Brunei citizens (2010). Other state projects focus on alternative areas of infrastructure such as hydroelectric dams, an integrated waste management system and the construction of the Sungai Liang Industrial Park — a major petrochemicals centre (2010). The Construction Planning and Research Unit (CPRU) is the department in the Ministry of Development that is responsible for facilitating the enhancement of the construction industry in Brunei Darussalam by promoting safety, quality and standardisation activities.
